Job Summary:
The Low Voltage and Fire Systems Trainer is responsible for developing, delivering, and maintaining comprehensive training programs for technicians, installers, and other relevant personnel involved in the installation, servicing, and inspection of low voltage and fire alarm/suppression systems. This role requires deep technical expertise in low voltage and fire safety technologies, strong communication skills, and a passion for adult education. The trainer will ensure that all staff are proficient in industry best practices, safety regulations, and company-specific procedures, leading to high-quality installations and exceptional customer service. Ideally, we are looking for someone close to our Charlotte, NC or Hunt Valley, MD Office.
Responsibilities:
Curriculum Development:
- Design, develop, and update training curricula, modules, and materials (e.g., presentations, manuals, lab exercises, assessments) for various low voltage systems, including but not limited to:
- Fire Alarm Systems (conventional, addressable, networked)
- Security Systems (access control, CCTV, intrusion detection)
- Audio/Visual Systems
- Intercom and Communication Systems
- Specific brand/manufacturer products used by the company.
- Ensure all training content is current with industry standards, manufacturer specifications, and company policies.
Training Delivery:
- Conduct engaging and effective training sessions in various formats, including classroom instruction, hands-on lab exercises, field training, and virtual sessions.
- Provide initial onboarding and foundational training for new hires.
- Deliver ongoing technical training, refreshers, and advanced courses for experienced technicians.
- Train on proper tool usage, equipment operation, and safety protocols relevant to low voltage and fire systems work.
- Facilitate troubleshooting workshops and problem-solving exercises.
Assessment & Evaluation:
- Develop and administer assessments (written, practical, performance-based) to gauge trainee comprehension and skill proficiency.
- Provide constructive feedback and coaching to trainees.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and recommend improvements.
- Track and document training completion and certification for all personnel.
Technical Expertise & Support:
- Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource for field technicians and management.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, codes, and best practices in low voltage and fire safety.
- Assist in troubleshooting complex technical issues in the field when necessary, using real-world scenarios to inform training.
- Collaborate with sales, engineering, and operations teams to understand technical requirements and integrate them into training.
Administrative & Other Duties:
- Manage training schedules, logistics, and resource allocation (e.g., training facilities, equipment).
- Maintain training records and certifications.
- Order and manage training supplies and equipment.
- Participate in industry associations and continuous professional development.
Job Requirements
Functional/Technical Skills:
- Exceptional technical knowledge of low voltage wiring, circuits, components, and troubleshooting.
- Expertise in fire alarm system design, installation, programming, testing, and maintenance.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
- Strong presentation, public speaking, and facilitation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation (travel may be required).
Education & Experience:
Education:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Fire Science, or a related technical field preferred.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5+years of hands-on experience as a Low Voltage Technician with significant exposure to Fire Alarm systems.
- Proven experience in a training, teaching, or leadership role (e.g., Lead Technician, Foreman, Senior Technician responsible for mentoring).
- Experience with: DMP, Honeywell, Bosch and Silent Knight
Certifications/Licenses: Required
- NICET Level, I, II or higher in Fire Alarm Systems (required for fire alarm focus).
Physical Requirements:
- Lifting: Able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
- Movement: Able to move 50 pounds occasionally.
- Pushing/Pulling: Able to push/pull objects with moderate effort frequently.
- Sitting/Standing: Able to sit and/or stand for up to 8 hours per day.
- Fine Motor Skills: Must have good hand-eye coordination and dexterity for tasks like grasping, manipulating, pinching, bending, reaching, twisting, and turning.
- Communication: Able to communicate effectively with customers, both orally and in writing.
- Visual Acuity: Able to see objects closely and perceive depth continuously.
- Conceptual Understanding: Able to understand, relate to, and apply concepts consistently.
- Memory: Able to remember multiple tasks and assignments over extended periods.
- Travel: May require occasional travel to provide technical support for customers. Valid driver's license, automobile insurance, and own transportation required.
Environmental Requirements:
- Primarily office and classroom environment.
- May involve occasional travel to job sites for hands-on training or technical support.
- Physical demands may include standing for long periods, lifting training equipment, and demonstrating technical procedures.
