Responsibilities

The Department of Facilities Management and Development at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Assistant Director of Environmental Health & Safety. The successful candidate will:

  • Assist the Director in the administration of the campus-wide safety programs (i.e. Hospital, Clinics, Research, University, Resident, Resident Halls, Daycare Center, etc.).
  • Provide administrative supervision in the absence of the Director.
  • Administer occupational exposure monitoring programs.
  • Perform appropriate risk assessment and manage components of occupational safety management programs to minimize the exposures.
  • Monitor and respond to indoor air quality issues.
  • Participate and assist with employee training and ongoing in-service education on "Right-to-Know" law, hazard communication standard compliance, toxic substance identification, storage and labeling, waste management, loss control risk management, protective clothing selection, utilization of personal protective equipment, noise control, eye protection, fire safety, chemical safety and other areas of safety.
  • Communication/interact with personnel in the identification and resolution of safety concerns identified.
  • Coordinate chemical hygiene plan, hazard communications standards, and hazardous waste disposal.
  • Manage annual laboratory safety and blood inspections.
  • Provide consultation services on health and safety issues, as required. Environmental and personal monitoring to respective Safety Committee.
  • Participate in emergency response planning.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health & Science, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in a healthcare and educational setting.
  • Excellent communication skills to be able to interact with all employees.
  • Must posses a vast knowledge of regulatory requirements to plan for and address any or regulatory requirements.
