Responsibilities
Position Overview:
We are seeking a highly experienced Principal System Safety Engineer to lead and execute system safety programs in compliance with MIL-STD-882E across complex defense and aerospace systems. This role requires deep technical expertise, cross-functional collaboration, and strategic coordination with government and customer stakeholders throughout the full lifecycle of the program—from concept through disposal.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement one or more MIL-STD-882E compliant system safety programs.
- Perform system safety tasks and analyses across:
- Management (Task Series 100)
- Analysis (Task Series 200)
- Evaluation (Task Series 300)
- Verification (Task Series 400)
- Analyze engineering hardware, mechanical and electrical drawings/schematics to assess fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety compliance.
- Design concise, testable safety requirements or analyze existing ones for adequacy.
- Collaborate across Integrated Product Teams (IPTs) to eliminate hazards or implement effective controls.
- Coordinate with customer safety representatives to clarify system requirements for software, hardware, and test teams.
- Support system test and tactical operation/maintenance procedures to ensure proper administrative safety controls.
- Prepare and present Safety Assessment Reports (SARs) and Safety Program Briefs for customer approval.
- Interface with stakeholders including customers, program offices, subcontractors, and vendors.
- Lead and mentor junior engineers in safety engineering practices.
- Monitor technical execution and ensure alignment with safety program goals.
- Participate in technical reviews and safety approval processes.
- Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards.
- Collaborate across disciplines to understand product architecture and design.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math (STEM).
- Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software, Electrical, or Firmware Engineering.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with DoD System Safety Programs (MIL-STD-882 / DO-178).
- Familiarity with Agile Development environments and system/software safety integration.
- Experience with Human Systems Integration and MIL-STD-1472 Human Factors Engineering.
- Knowledge of Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and proposal development.
- Experience with Engineering Change Proposals, Engineering Review Boards, and System Safety Working Groups.
