This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for a Plumbing and Fire Protection Engineer for our New York Penn Plaza office.  Be involved in projects with our Transportation and Infrastructure (T&I) Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client’s objectives and solves their challenges.

Our Engineers work on high quality, high-profile transportation and infrastructure projects in the Greater New York Metropolitan Area. You will actively participate in the full project cycle, from the design phase through the final construction close-out. WSP offers excellent growth opportunities.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary: $80,000 - $95,000

Responsibilities

Your Impact
  • Design Plumbing and Fire Protection systems for transportation and infrastructure projects within a brownfield environment. Projects include transit maintenance facilities, ventilation structures, station complexes, and tunnels
  • Support the design of plumbing systems including domestic water, sanitary waste/vent, storm, compressed air, industrial waste, and fuel-oil systems
  • Support the design of fire protection systems including fire sprinkler, standpipe, and clean-agent extinguishing systems
  • Participate in field inspections to obtain required information to proceed with the design
  • Conduct and document engineering analysis work in a clear and concise manner, including code path analysis/research, sprinkler/standpipe hydraulic calculations, and equipment sizing
  • Develop calculation reports, including calculation methods and results, design assumptions, and other technical information
  • Work independently on projects or work within a project team with other technical staff to design and detail new systems that are needed
  • Ensure work is accurate and coordinated and that the quality assurance measures have been followed
  • Communicate design recommendations to clients, project team, construction contractors, and vendors in presentations, workshops, meetings, via email and phone as necessary
  • Develop system design proficiently in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Revit as required by each project's CAD standard
  • Write reports that clearly communicate field observations, design alternatives, and design recommendations
  • Prioritize work activities effectively based on assigned work and project schedules
  • Assist in construction administration activities, including submittal reviews and RFI disposition

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection, or related field
  • 3 to 5 years of relevant experience designing Plumbing and Fire Protection systems for a variety of building types
  • Proficient in AutoCAD, MicroStation, and Revit
  • Capable of designing Plumbing and Fire Protection systems from conceptual planning to completed design for construction
  • Capable of writing reports on Plumbing and Fire Protection systems and designs
  • Capable of selecting major Plumbing and Fire Protection equipment
  • Capable of preparing sprinkler hydraulic calculations utilizing HASS or similar software
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Excel and Word
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • Excellent creative thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Possess ASPE CPD and/or NFPA CFPS Certification
  • Prior experience working with State and Federal transportation agencies.
  • Familiar with ICC family of building and fire codes.
  • Familiar with NFPA 13, 14, 130, 502, and 2001.
