Department Description

The UCSF Facilities Services Department (FS) is committed to creating an exceptional campus physical environment to support the research, teaching, health care and community service mission of the University. FS employs over 400 professional staff and acts as steward for over $90 million in operating funds to achieve its goals in operating and maintaining the UCSF campus environment. Located in the Campus Life Services (CLS) organization, FS is organized into five distinct units: (1) Mission Bay / East Campus Operations, (2) Parnassus / West Campus Operations, (3) Infrastructure & Utilities Services, (4) Customer Service & Technology, and (5) Strategic Organization Development. Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Fire & Life Safety Systems Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for Campus Fire Alarm Systems installations, programming, operation, maintenance, inspection, testing, Fireworks monitoring networks, other system connection and inventory.  The incumbent inspects in-progress construction work and performs final inspections to ensure all work performed complies with applicable codes.

Job Requirements

Required Qualifications

  • Two years of formal fire alarm systems technician experience with Edward EST-3 Fire Alarm systems, installation & programming and Fireworks stations.
  • Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations; two (2) years of experience at the operational level in an appropriate craft; and knowledge and abilities
  • Demonstrated theoretical and working knowledge of electricity, electronics, and electronic and computerized fire alarm system design and operation.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot fire alarm system failures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge or ability to obtain manufacturers certification on the following systems: Edwards Systems Technology panels and networked fire alarm systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and fire system schematics.
  • Demonstrated computer skills with MS Word, Excel, Access, NT 4.0 and XP operating systems.
  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes.
  • Ability to communicate clearly in writing and orally with contractors and design consultants.
  • Demonstrated ability to give clear written and oral instructions.
  • Fingerprinting, background check, and physical examination required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of formal fire alarm systems technician apprenticeship with Edward Fire Alarm system, EST-3 Installation & programming or equivalent education, and experience with fire alarm systems.
