Fire Captain

The University of Alaska Fire Department is seeking an energetic, progressive, and highly motivated Fire Captain to join our team of career fire officers in mentoring student firefighters. Under the Fire Captains' tutelage, student employees, provide fire and emergency medical services to 24,000 people on and off campus, answering 2,000 emergency calls per year. The Fire Captain fulfills a vital role in the safety, education, work experience, and on-the-job training of our student firefighters, in addition to day-to-day fire department activities and operations.

The University of Alaska Fire Department is unique in that other than the full-time staff, the firefighters are university students. Work involves potentially extreme work setting. There is frequent need to stand, walk, sit, talk, or hear, use hands to finger, handle or feel and perform other similar actions during the course of the workday. There is also the risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens, chemicals, mechanical parts, and other hazards.

Physical fitness is a requirement for all firefighter personnel. 24 hour shifts and emergency call back as well as the nature of the duty environment require individuals who can work under hazardous conditions and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time.

To thrive in this role, you must possess principles, practices and procedures of modern firefighting and the principles, practices and procedures of supervising a fire fighting company; knowledge Incident command procedures and unit deployment; knowledge of purpose, operation and maintenance of firefighting vehicles, equipment and apparatus; knowledge of policies, rules, and standard operating procedures; skills in fire prevention principles and practices; skilled in emergency medical triage, treatment, and transportation; knowledge of principles and practices of safe motor vehicles operation and maintenance; knowledge of building construction; ability in problem solving and decision making; skilled in computer software including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications; possess communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; possess basic mathematical and science skills; possess basic writing abilities to include patient encounter forms, incident reports, daily activity/shift reports, and other professional correspondence; ability to properly interact with others including coworkers, the public, federal and state agencies, and with supervisory and management staff; and ability to operate and take care of fire apparatus and equipment.
