
Fire Safety Technician - 2nd Shift
Job Description
We are seeking a hands-on, detail-oriented Technician to join our Fire Protection Lab team in Northbrook, IL. This is a 2nd shift position, running Monday through Friday from 1 PM to 9 PM, focused on large-scale fire testing of wire and cable products. The role involves physical work in a demanding lab environment and offers the opportunity to contribute directly to safety testing processes.
Lab Environment:
The Fire Protection Lab includes three burn chambers, including a two-story riser chamber used for large-scale fire tests. The work is physically intensive, involving:
- Heavy lifting, bending, stooping, and ladder climbing
- Use of respirators due to exposure to toxic smoke, dust, and debris
- Operation of forklifts and hand pallet jacks for sample handling
- A dirty and dynamic environment requiring safety awareness and physical resilience
Pay Transparency Verbiage:
Total Rewards: We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career . The estimated salary range for this position is $42,000 to $56,000 and is based on multiple factors, including job-related knowledge/skills, experience, geographical location, as well as other factors. This position is eligible for annual bonus compensation with a target payout of 5% of the base salary. This position also provides health benefits such as medical, dental and vision; wellness benefits such as mental and financial health; and retirement savings (401K) commensurate with the standard rewards offered in each individual location or country. We also provide full-time employees with paid time off including vacation (15 days), holiday including floating holidays (12 days) and sick time off (72 hours).
Responsibilities
- Set up and operate test equipment and burn chambers for fire testing
- Build and adapt test setups based on datasheets and engineering instructions
- Examine test samples and interpret blueprints, schematics, and wiring diagrams
- Conduct tests following defined plans and record results accurately
- Evaluate sample performance and document findings in test reports
- Perform routine maintenance and basic calibration of lab equipment
- Communicate with clients and internal teams during test setups and execution
- Maintain a clean and organized lab area
- Support continuous improvement initiatives and suggest process enhancements
- Use Labware to build samples, manage data packages, and close projects
Job Requirements
- 1–2 years of relevant experience in a technical or lab-based role (entry to mid-level).
- Experience with pressure transducers, bidirectional probes, and control dampers is a strong plus.
- Forklift operation experience preferred; training available if needed.
- No requirement for electrician or mechanical backgrounds.

- Wearing respirators during sample handling and test loading
- Comfortable working in environments with toxic smoke and debris.
- Must be able to operate forklifts and hand pallet jacks.
