Our Applied Science practice leverages a unique combination of technologies and expertise to engineer practical solutions to problems of national and international importance.  We apply expertise in solid and fluid dynamics, materials science, acoustics, risk assessments, and computational simulation methods to solve complex problems. We perform research, mathematical modeling, software development, and design to manage risks to life safety in military platforms and installations, ships and submarines, critical infrastructure, tall buildings, public facilities, industrial and petrochemical plants, and automotive and airborne vehicles. Military, government, corporate, and academic clients value the validation of Applied Science’s software and the critical insights gained from correlating analysis with testing.

Responsibilities

The Role

We have the opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Applied Science Practice with a focus on Fire Dynamics and CFD modeling. This is a full-time opportunity intended for PHD or MS graduates who graduated within the last 24 months. The day-to-day role includes direct communication with senior staff working on Fire Dynamics and CFD modeling for various fire types, including alternative fuel, in transportation infrastructure and naval structures. It also includes R&D into novel fire protection and safety solutions.

Responsibilities

The Senior Engineer is expected to perform Fire Dynamics and CFD modeling to address deflagration, smoke transport and control, and thermal load effects on structures. The Senior Engineer will join an interdisciplinary team of computational mechanics engineers (CFD, FEM, AI/ML, etc.).

Tasks may include the following:

  • Characterizations of hazards and heat release rates for cellulosic, hydrocarbon, and alternative fuel fires.
  • CFD modeling of Fire Dynamics, Gas Dispersion, Smoke Propagation, and effects of Fire Suppression Systems. Heat transfer and structural response modeling.
  • Assessment of mitigation solutions (Passive Fire Protection, Fixed Fire Suppression Systems, Mechanical Systems, etc)
  • Researching and interpreting published research, technology data, and engineering studies on alternative fuel cell technologies and fire test data
  • Documenting the design, development, and/or analysis process in engineering presentations, reports, and drawings. Communicating findings to project team and/or clients
  • Pedestrian egress and evacuation modeling

Job Requirements

Requirements

  • PhD or MS graduate within the last 24 months. Graduate research experience in Fire Dynamics and/or CFD is desirable.
  • Working knowledge of CFD software (FDS, Ansys CFX, PHAST, FLACS, etc.) is desirable.
  • A collaborative work approach in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and business professionals is essential.
