Responsibilities
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Fire Extinguisher Field Technician is responsible for inspecting, servicing, and maintaining portable fire extinguishers at customer sites in accordance with NFPA 10, DOT regulations, and local codes. This role ensures extinguishers are fully compliant, operational, and safe, while delivering excellent customer service in the field.
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
- Perform inspections of suppression system equipment at customer sites, ensuring compliance with NFPA 10 and company standards.
- Verify extinguisher type, placement, accessibility, and condition.
- Perform maintenance, recharge, and replacement of extinguishers as required.
- Conduct hydrostatic testing when needed, in accordance with NFPA and DOT requirements.
- Apply new tags, seals, and labels following service.
- Document inspection and service activities using company-approved forms/software.
- Communicate inspection and service results clearly to customers, addressing questions and providing recommendations.
- Ensure accurate completion of service records and compliance documentation.
- Follow all company safety protocols and represent Relay with professionalism in the field.
- Stay current on NFPA, DOT, and local fire code requirements.
Job Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school diploma or equivalent (required).
- 1–3 years of experience inspecting and servicing fire extinguishers (preferred).
- Knowledge of NFPA 10 and DOT cylinder handling/testing requirements.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to work independently in the field.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and customer service skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
- FDNY S96 – Certification of Fitness current or to be obtained shortly after hire
IDEAL QUALITIES
- Fire extinguisher inspection/service certification (preferred or willingness to obtain).
- DOT hydrostatic testing certification or willingness to obtain.
- Strong safety awareness and compliance mindset.
