Responsibilities

The Senior Scientist, Safety is responsible for toxicological evaluations of raw materials and cosmetic formulations to ensure a high degree of consumer protection.

  • Provide safety input into development programs, including assessment of potential raw materials and screening of formulations
  • Conduct thorough safety evaluations of cosmetic products, considering ingredient profiles, chemical structures, exposure dosages, stability tests, microbiology data, and available toxicology data
  • Develop and implement a robust cosmetovigilance program for OLAPLEX products
  • Assess potential risks for specific professional groups whose exposure conditions may differ from those of regular consumers
  • Build hazard/risk identification approaches for cosmetic ingredients and define next-generation safety science strategies (e.g. in silico)
  • Manage regulatory toxicology defense of ingredients as well as assessment of new ingredients, including ingredient safety assessments required for registration
  • Manage network of external testing labs and clinical research organizations (CROs) and lead safety testing program (in vitro and in vivo) for ingredients and formulas
  • Participate in trade association activities in areas of toxicology and risk assessment for regulatory submissions and product/ingredient defense
  • Suggest necessary precautions and warnings for consumers during the evaluation process and collaborate with responsible business units to incorporate precautionary information on packaging as needed

Job Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, Toxicology or similar. Advanced degree preferred.
  • At least 8 years’ experience in safety assessment of cosmetic products/ingredients
  • Knowledge in causality assessment, signal detection and methodologies applicable to safety evaluation & risk management activities
  • Experience in applying a variety of methods (e.g. literature, in vitro, in vivo) to support safety assessments and registration of cosmetic ingredients and products
  • Engaged in relevant trade associations and societies to ensure approaches are consistent with industry standards/best practices
  • Proven scientific and leadership track record in Safety Sciences (publications, oral communications) preferred
