Under general supervision, the duties require the exercise of considerable judgement in providing security and protecting the safety of individuals and public property in school buildings and on school grounds.
Responsibilities
TYPICAL DUTIES * 1. Provides security and protects the safety of individuals and public property in school buildings and on school grounds. * 2. Patrols all areas of school buildings and school grounds, including but not limited to locker rooms, rest rooms, cafeterias, stairwells, hallways, athletic fields, parking lots, on foot and/or using a vehicle. * 3. Maintains order and implements survival techniques in emergencies such as fire, riot, accident or disturbance, lockdowns, bomb threats and shelter during evacuations. * 4. Reports issues of safety, hazardous situations, attempted thefts, unauthorized entries, vandalism, fire or unusual circumstances. * 5. Advises administration on school safety procedures and policies, and remains aware of modern developments in the field. * 6. Directs and regulates the flow of traffic; monitors compliance with parking regulations and checks identification, as required. 7. Performs crowd control and maintains the presence of 'authority' during events. * 8. Observes and monitors behaviors and interactions among students, staff and visitors with an eye toward averting and intervening in disruptions and/or misconduct. 9. Staffs and rotates assigned security posts. * 10. Ensures all doors, windows and gates are properly secured; reports evidence of tampering or irregularity. 11. Maintains school security log of visitors and deliveries; may admit visitors utilizing a computer driven security system. * 12. Maintains records and prepares reports. 13. Renders first aid, as required. * 14. May physically restrain individuals engaged in misconduct. * 15. May perform preliminary investigation of possible criminal activity, vehicular accidents, and possible threats to safety and security.

Job Requirements
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1. Extensive knowledge of safety and security methods and procedures. 2. Extensive knowledge of procedures and practices for protecting and safeguarding buildings and property. 3. Ability to carry out established security procedures in all emergency situations. 4. Ability to maintain order. 5. Ability to exercise judgment and common sense in stressful situations. 6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. 7. Ability to express oneself effectively, both orally and in writing. 8. Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Minimum Qualifications
Training and Experience
Ten years of satisfactory experience as a sworn police officer in the State of New York as defined by Section 1.20(34) of New York Criminal Procedure Law.
Necessary Special Requirement
Continuing possession of an appropriate class, valid New York State Driver's License.
