Responsibilities

Position Summary
Performs new construction and recurring mandated fire inspections to ensure compliance with the North
Carolina Fire Prevention Code and Mecklenburg County Fire Prevention Ordinance. This position is
responsible for conducting fire and/or explosion origin and cause investigations; and delivering fire
prevention, public education, and other community risk reduction programs.

Essential Functions
Conduct on-site inspections of new construction projects, renovations, and fire protection system
installations to ensure compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code.
Conduct recurring mandated fire code compliance inspections to ensure compliance with the
North
Carolina Fire Prevention Code and other adopted industry standards.
Review site plans/building plans for new construction or renovations of structures to determine
compliance with the North Carolina Fire Prevention Code and other adopted industry standards.
Prepare and submit fire inspection reports and thoroughly document all other related activities.
Issue fire code violation notices and/or citations for failure to comply with the North Carolina Fire
Prevention Code and ensure mitigation/compliance.
Educate grade school students and deliver fire prevention and other community risk reduction
programs to the community.
Perform fire and/or explosion origin and cause investigations and prepare investigation reports.
Provide response, resources, and overall support to County Fire Departments.
Perform emergency management liaison and support functions.
Explain and interpret provisions of fire codes to building owners, managers, and employers.
Provide educational training related to fire and life safety procedures and practices.
Gather and document details of plans and submittal review; determine compliance and issue
permits based upon approved plans.
Provide technical expertise, advice and guidance related to code compliance questions and
interpretations.

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
Experience:
Minimum of three years of fire service experience including but not limited to fire suppression, fire
inspection, fire origin and cause investigation, fire prevention, plan review, fire and life safety education,
or other job-related experience.


Education:
Associate's degree in Fire Prevention, Fire Science or related field
Combination of relevant education and relevant experience accepted?: Yes


Licenses and Certifications
Must obtain North Carolina Fire Prevention Inspector Level III Certification within one year of hire.
Requires a valid North Carolina or South Carolina Driver's License
Requires County Driving Privileges
Annual Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) check required.


Preferred Qualifications
North Carolina and/or National Fire Investigator Certification
Professional Fire Engineer

Advanced in various computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite
