SEASONAL - Wildfire Mitigation Technician
In this position, you will perform forestry and maintenance tasks for the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) Wildfire Mitigation Section.
This is a seasonal (at-will) position with benefits limited to those required by applicable state and federal laws, which include Worker's Compensation, Medicare, Unemployment Insurance, and PERA (Public Employees' Retirement Association).
Responsibilities
Essential Functions - the basic job duties an employee must be able to perform:
- Provide support to the CSFD Wildfire Mitigation Section’s Neighborhood Chipping Program by dragging brush, feeding a woodchipper, sweeping and raking leaf litter, pine needles, and woody debris (this is the primary duty for this position)
- Perform hazardous fuels reduction projects in the City of Colorado Springs’ Wildland Urban Interface as needed
- Maintain station facilities (clean bathrooms, sweep/mop, and perform lawn care)
- Provide basic maintenance on equipment; properly and safely used assigned vehicles, forestry equipment, and power tools
- Provide logistical and clerical support, and communicate with the public in the event of a wildfire

Ability to:
- Safely operate and maintain small hand tools and power equipment such as leaf blowers, woodchippers, brush cutters, chainsaws, trimmers, pruners, mowers, and other section equipment as needed
- Safely operate assigned City vehicles, including dump trucks and trucks with trailers
- Follow oral and written directions and work as part of a crew
- Communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Work in extreme weather conditions (primarily the heat)
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Possess and maintain a valid, non-probationary Colorado driver's license not subject to restriction related to alcohol and/or drug violations or pending charges
Preferred Qualifications
- Specialized college level coursework in natural resource management, fire science, forestry, or a related field
- Wildland Fire Training (NWCG S-130/190 or Red Card)
Additional Information
Physical Demands: This position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently and walk on uneven terrain, steep slopes, and rocky conditions.
