The ideal candidate would have previous experience with resource planning, supporting leadership and overseeing regulatory compliance.

Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities

  • Acts as the principal safety and Physical Environment regulatory standards representative to leaders, visitors, team members and contractors, including assigned locations. Directs and interacts with regulatory agency personnel during compliance inspections. Understands and shares job expertise with others, including leaders, peers, and team members and utilizes problem solving skills for complex situations that arise.
  • Provides oversight to ensure system-wide and strategic compliance in collaboration with departmental leadership.
  • Assist with resource planning and supporting leadership in identifying goals and priorities for the safety team, including decision-making related to program framework.
  • Leads in policy review and development, process improvement, implementation of best practices, and onboarding new team members on an as needed basis. Assists in the development of and provides education for the Physical Environment including annual safety training, new team member orientation/training, and contractor orientation.
  • Provides oversight and ensures regulatory compliance through direction and leadership. This is achieved through use of safety expertise, including knowledge of codes, when working directly other leaders.
  • Acts as the hospital safety/regulatory point of contact with federal, state, county, and local officials and serves as the safety technical expert. This person is responsible for compliance with regulatory requirements of such agencies as Department of Public Health, DNV, Joint Commission, CMS, EPA, OSHA, and local authorities having jurisdiction. Independently develops solutions as required to maintain compliance.
  • Leads ongoing monitoring of the physical environment through committee oversight and regular inspection rounds to ensure a safe environment. Acts as the subject matter expert in the electronic rounding platform, including scheduling, trending and analysis of data, communication with department leaders and reporting to the Physical Environment and Quality Committees. Independently identifies gaps in the safety program and uses career expertise and experience to problem-solve.
  • Supports Quality and Accreditation initiatives by developing reports, analyses and actions required for the Physical Environment. Ensures reports are prepared by the respective leaders for Safety, Security, Hazardous Materials and Waste, Medical Equipment, Utilities, Life Safety and Emergency Management.
  • Assist with analysis and determining proper procedures for mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery in emergency disasters situations and assists facilities in developing and implementing those procedures.

Job Requirements

Licensure, Registration, And/or Certification Required

  • None

Education Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety or related field

Experience Required

  • 7 years of related field experience preferably within the healthcare setting.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • Familiarity with The Joint Commission “Environment of Care,” or DNV (Det Norske Veritas) “Physical Environment” NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 99 Healthcare Facilities Code, EPA, and OSHA requirements for General and Construction Industries preferred.
  • Must have the ability to clearly communicate verbally, in person, and in writing with patients, families/agencies and the health care team.
  • Must possess a strong sense of urgency and make sound decisions.
  • Must be a critical thinker, have ability to solve problems, and is solution oriented.
  • Successful project management experience.
  • Intermediate to advanced computer skills with demonstration of skill and competence in use of all Microsoft Office applications required.
  • Responsible for setting a strong example of safety by working safely and utilizing personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriately.

Physical Requirements And Working Conditions

  • This position requires travel, therefore, will be exposed to weather and road conditions.
  • Operates all equipment necessary to perform the job.
  • Exposed to a normal office environment.
  • Must be able to carry up to 25 pounds of material and various types of equipment.
  • Travel to other facilities in personal vehicle is required
  • Subject to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions

Preferred Job Requirements

  • Master’s degree preferred Safety Management, Safety Engineering, Occupational Safety & Health, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Management, Risk Management, Regulatory Compliance
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Health Care Environmental Manager (HEM) Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP), or other related industry certifications highly preferred
