As the Fire Safety Officer, you will be part of an exciting DDG 51 Post Delivery Team serving as the principal advisor to the Naval Supervising Authority (NSA) and Ship’s Crew during PSA and other modernization/repair availabilities for DDG 51 class ships. You will act as the Chairman of the Fire Safety Council, the FSO provides fire safety oversight including daily safety and housekeeping inspections to ensure compliance with Navy Standard Item 009-08 and NSTM 8010 Industrial Ship Safety Manual for Fire Prevention and Response.
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
Serve as Chairman of the Fire Safety Council:
- Publish weekly Safety Plan of the Week
- Publish weekly Fire Safety Council minutes
- Draft low risk deviation requests in accordance with the 8010 manual and forward to the ship Commanding Officer for approval
- Work with FSC membership to develop mitigation plans that maintain a strong fire safety posture during high workload industrial availability
- Schedule, chair, and document Fire Safety Council meetings
- Review fire safety discrepancies, risk assessments and monitor shipyard COA plan
- Brief the NSA Representative, Chief Engineer and Damage Control Assistant on fire safety posture and trends
- Play an active role in the daily safety and housekeeping walkthrough
- Inspect compartments for fire hazards, improper material storage, housekeeping deficiencies, and access/egress issues
- Verify compliance with contractor hot work controls, fire watches, and integrity of fire zone boundaries throughout the ship
- Identify unsafe conditions related to combustibles, flammable liquids, ventilation, and electrical hazards
- Coordinate immediate corrective actions with shipyard management representatives and ship’s force
- Track discrepancies to closure and brief results as necessary at daily production and fire safety.
Fire Protection & Safety Oversight:
- Monitor and validate contractor corrective action plans
- Ensure compliance with:
- NSTM 8010
- Navy Standard Item 009-08
- Maintain Fire Safety Council records
- Act as NSA point of contact during 8010 Validation Exercise and the 8010 Fire Drill
Job Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret DoW clearance. Preferred Active Secret Clearance.
- Must be a US Citizen
- Must have a HS diploma or equivalent
- 8 years of experience serving on US Navy surface ships or maintaining them during industrial availabilities
- Preferred experience as an Engineering Limited Duty Officer (LDO), Engineering Chief Warrant Officer (CWO), Damage Control Assistant, or Damage Control Leading Chief Petty Officer (DCLPO)
- Senior enlisted or officer-level experience managing shipboard damage control and safety programs on US Navy ships
- Must have intermediate capability in MS Office Suite
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds and be able to stand, walk, and bend for extended periods while inspecting ships under repair.
- Must be able to maneuver in shipyard industrial environment and onboard Navy ships
- Must have valid US driver’s license with a clean driving record and able to travel to maintenance locations in the Norfolk VA area.
- Be thoroughly familiar with the contents of 8010 manual and Navy Standard Item 009-08
- Act as the NSA fire safety subject matter expert
- Interact daily with shipyard designated Hot Work Coordinator and Damage Control Assistant
- Be able to Act as NSA point of contact during 8010 Validation Exercise and the 8010 Fire Drill
- Be able to pass a background check and drug screen to include finger prints to gain access to the customer site.
- Must be able to travel up to 25% of the time.
