The Apprentice performs tasks at various job sites, including Rapid Fire Protection offices and/or shops. This position could require overnight travel with the possibility of extended stays out of local area. The Apprentice will be expected to use a variety hand and power tools. With proper training he or she will also become proficient with trade specific tools.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Picking and sorting of pipes, fittings and hardware associated with the building construction trades.
  • Sorting and staging fire sprinkler pipe and materials.
  • Cleaning and prepping sprinkler pipe for installation.
  • Hauling pipe, fittings and hardware from staging areas to installation location.
  • Load and/or unloading trucks manually or with motorized lifts. The Apprentice will not be allowed to operate lifts until properly trained.
  • Measure, cut and groove sprinkler pipe to specifications.
  • Cutting and drilling penetrations through walls and floors for pipe installation.
  • Inspect tools, cords and ladder/lifts as needed per Foreman’s direction.
  • Assist with inventory of construction materials on job sights and office/shop areas.
  • Maintain a clean job site that could include sweeping, picking up loose materials, cleaning and organizing the work area, removing shavings from oiler, replacing threading machine cardboard/plywood, wiping down oil spray.
  • Blueprint reading.
  • Driving company vehicles (½ and ¾ ton pickups).
  • Climbing ladders to assist with installation of sprinkler pipe
  • Compliance with any stipulations set by the General contractor enabling onsite installation.
  • Studying and testing to meet the Apprenticeship Program requirements and time sensitive benchmarks.
  • Taking the initiative to install sprinkler pipe to a level of proficiency relative to their apprenticeship level.
  • Advanced/competent Apprentices may get opportunities to run small projects under the supervision of the
  • Regional Labor Superintendent.
  • Apprentices may be asked to install larger or specific portions of the sprinkler project under the supervision of a
  • Project Foreman.

Other Duties:

  • Ability to lift minimum of 50 lbs. and work at excessive heights up to and including 100 feet
  • Have a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
  • Ability to travel and have a flexible work schedule

  • Willing to pass a pre-employment drug test and background check

Job Requirements

Education/Qualification:  

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and proficiency in working with hand and power tools.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to follow instructions accurately.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Comfortable working with a computer.
  • Eagerness to learn and develop new skills in the field of fire sprinkler system installation.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to walk and maneuver self around construction job sites and climb ladders occasionally.
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy pipe daily (10-40 lbs frequently and 50-75 lbs occasionally).
  • Bending and squatting frequently and for long periods of time.
  • Reaching and performing work above shoulder level frequently and for long periods of time.
  • Ability to withstand occasional exposure to hot, cold, and/or inclement weather on job sites.
  • Ability to wear PPE such as steel toe shoes, ear plugs, safety glass, safety harnesses, and hard hats occasionally on job sites.
