HNTB is seeking a Mechanical Engineer III to join our team in the New York City office. You will be an integral part of a design and analysis team made up of primarily professional engineers. Candidates with 5-15 years of experience are encouraged to apply.
The position is responsible for tunnel ventilation and fire & life safety in all types of tunnels, highway, transit and rail. The successful candidate will perform calculations to determine fan performance requirements, standpipe design, emergency egress including modeling, smoke movement modeling and egress route determination, fire protection and lead teams performing these functions.
The successful candidate will demonstrate proficiency using some or all of the following: the Subway Environment Simulation (SES); IDA Tunnels; Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using FLUENT or FDS; Design capabilities for tunnel rehab or new tunnel builds.
The successful candidate will be able to lead others and perform work responsibilities including:
- Perform calculations for fan capacities and pressure requirements
- Perform calculations to establish smoke and heat movement in underground environments
- Perform egress calculations
- Establish design parameters from which design drawings, specifications and reports are generated.
- Development of drawings and specifications primarily related to underground transportation.
- Undertaking design and analysis support for tunnel fire and life safety systems including tunnel ventilation, standpipe and deluge systems.
- Drafting technical reports in a range of engineering areas, including feasibility studies, basis of design reports and technical analysis.
- Working towards professional qualifications.
Responsibilities
What You'll Do:
- Responsible for the planning and distribution of discipline-specific work, and adherence to the schedule and budget on projects.
- Assists in marketing responsibilities, including proposal generation.
- Assists with the development of scope of work and level of effort for projects and/or assignments within discipline.
- Oversees completeness and accuracy of project team’s work within the technical discipline. Guides and mentors team to overall project objectives.
- Coordinates technical aspects of project with client counterpart and teaming partners at staff level for work within the discipline.
- Works closely with other disciplines on multi-discipline projects.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
What You'll Need:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering and 6 years of relevant experience, or
- Master’s degree in Engineering and 5 years of relevant experience, or
- PhD in Engineering and 4 years of relevant experience
What We Prefer:
- Bachelor Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Masters or PhD preferable)
- 5-15 years experience
- PE License or a Certification as a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) professional with demonstrated tracking to become a Professional Engineer.
