Work Environment
The work environment is primarily an automated manufacturing plant with a concrete floor and is characterized by some temperature extremes, moderate noise, and forklift traffic. The individual must be able to perform all essential functions as appropriate on the plant floor, in meetings, and with employees, management, customers and suppliers.Candidate must perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation efficiently and accurately, and without causing significant safety threat to self or others. Responsibilities
About the Role AESC is seeking an experienced Fire Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) to lead fire protection, fire safety engineering, and regulatory compliance efforts for utility-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) across North America. This role will serve as the company's technical authority on fire safety and will work closely with Product Management, R&D, Engineering, Sales, Compliance, Customers, AHJs, Fire Consultants, and Certification Bodies to ensure safe and code-compliant deployment of energy storage systems. What Will You Do
- Serve as the company's fire safety technical authority for utility-scale BESS products and projects.
- Lead fire safety strategy, risk assessments, and hazard analyses for ESS deployments.
- Support product development teams in designing and implementing fire detection, suppression, gas management, ventilation, and thermal runaway mitigation solutions.
- Interpret and apply relevant codes and standards including NFPA 855, UL 9540A, UL 9540, NFPA 68, NFPA 69, and any local AHJ requirements.
- Support customer technical due diligence, permitting activities, and discussions with AHJs, fire marshals, utilities, EPCs, developers, and independent engineers.
- Develop fire safety technical documentation, white papers, application notes, and customer-facing presentations.
- Evaluate emerging fire safety technologies, suppression systems, and industry best practices.
- Collaborate with certification agencies, testing laboratories, and third-party fire consultants.
- Monitor industry developments and provide recommendations to improve product safety and compliance.
Job Requirements
What You Need
- Bachelor's degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related technical field.
- 7+ years of experience in fire protection engineering, battery safety, ESS, renewable energy, or related industries.
- Strong understanding of lithium-ion battery technology and thermal runaway behavior.
- Experience with UL 9540A testing, NFPA 855 compliance, and utility-scale BESS deployments.
- Experience working with AHJs, fire departments, certification agencies, and code officials.
- Strong technical communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to travel up to 10%.
