The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, located in Newport News, Virginia, is operated by SURATech, LLC, for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science. The lab’s primary mission is to explore the fundamental nature of confined states of quarks and gluons, including the nucleons that make up the mass of the visible universe. Jefferson Lab is also a world leader in the development of the superconducting radiofrequency technology used for the lab’s Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. This technology is the basis for an increasing array of applications at Jefferson Lab, other DOE labs, and in the international scientific community. The DOE has chosen Jefferson Lab as the lead for its future High Performance Data Facility. The HPDF will be a $300-500 million computing and data infrastructure resource that will provide transformational capabilities for data analysis, networking and storage for the nation’s research enterprise. It will provide researchers with tools, methods and technologies to maximize the scientific value of data.Jefferson Lab has more than 900 full-time employees and an international scientific user community of more than 1,700 researchers whose work has resulted in over 3,960 scientific papers and journal articles and nearly 200 patents. Research at Jefferson Lab also contributes to thesis research for about one-third of all U.S. Ph.D.s awarded annually in nuclear physics. The lab’s outstanding STEM workforce development program for teachers and scientists, as well as K-12 and undergraduate students, builds the critical knowledge and skills in the physical sciences that will help solve the nation’s future challenges.
Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) is a U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science national laboratory. Scientists worldwide utilize the lab’s unique particle accelerator, known as the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), to probe the most basic building blocks of matter - helping us to better understand these particles and the forces that bind them - and ultimately our world.
In addition, the lab capitalizes on its unique technologies and expertise to perform advanced computing and applied research with industry and university partners, and provides programs designed to help educate the next generation in science and technology.
Managing and operating the lab for DOE is SURATech, LLC.
